May Hartwell
from Globe-Gazette from Mason City, Iowa on September 25, 1950

If I could with a line or two
Paint dreary lives a rosy hue,
And raise the veil from tired eyes
And make them open with surprise
To happiness, beneath its mask –
O Master, what a lot to ask!

If I could reach down in the slime
And grasp a soul immersed in crime,
And raise it from its low estate
To see the light at heaven's gate,
What joy would be my daily task!
But Master – it's a lot to ask!
