Dear Friend:

I meant to call today, I really did.

But, then there was a knock at the door...oops,
then the kettle started to boil over on
the stove, and I just had to get to the drug store --
oh no, out of bread. Just another
moment to pop over to the corner store.
And then, Myrtle called...boy, can she ever
"talk a blue streak"!
Oh, it was then time for my favourite soap opera...and,
then before I knew it, suppertime rolled around.

Well, you just can't call while people are eating, now can you?
I meant to call after dinner but, this double-bill was playing at the cinema and, well, you know, they never let out before 11:00 p.m... and I had to rush, it began at 7:00 p.m...

Yes, definitely, I'll call tomorrow...

The phone rang continuously while I sat holding the receiver
in one hand and reading the newspaper with the other:

LONELY, Friend: Died two days ago of loneliness, waiting for someone to call...
no one attended the funeral.
